What AI visibility is, and how to measure it
A growing share of buying research now happens inside AI answers rather than on results pages. AI visibility describes whether those answers mention your brand, cite your content and recommend you, and unlike much of what is written about AI search, it can be measured.
A working definition
AI visibility is the degree to which AI search systems: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Perplexity, mention your brand, cite your content as a source, and recommend you when buyers ask the questions your category answers.
It is related to classic SEO but not the same thing. A ranking is a position on a page of links. An AI answer is a synthesis: the system decides which sources it trusts, blends them, and often names only a handful. Being that named handful is the new front door.
Why it matters now
People ask assistants questions they would never type into a search box, longer, more specific, closer to a decision. When an assistant answers a high-intent comparison question and your brand is absent, you are not losing a click; you are absent from the shortlist.
The winners of this shift are decided by content: systems cite sources that are factually reliable, clearly structured and consistent with what the rest of the web says about you.
How to measure it
The practical instrument is prompt tracking: a fixed set of the questions your buyers actually ask, run continuously across the relevant AI engines, with the answers recorded. From that you get three measurable layers: mentions (is your brand named?), citations (is your content used as a source?) and share of voice (how often are you named versus the competitors in your category?).
Tracked over time and benchmarked against competitors, these numbers turn “how do we show up in AI?” from a feeling into a metric you can operate against.
What actually moves the numbers
Content that AI systems trust has three properties. It is factually grounded: every claim is backed by documentation or verifiable sources, so it survives checking. It is on brand: written in your voice, consistent with everything else you publish. And it is citeable: structured so a machine can extract the answer, clear headings, direct answers, clean markup.
Off-site presence matters too, as does a machine-readable footprint like grounding pages: how often and how accurately you are mentioned on pages you do not own is a strong signal for AI systems deciding whom to trust.
