How to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT: five steps
In short
When a buyer asks ChatGPT something, ChatGPT reads pages on the web to answer. If those pages name you, ChatGPT names you in its answer. Five steps get you there: understand your product, your audience and their keywords and prompts, find the right channels, and produce for them. scaile takes these steps with your team or runs them for you.
Key takeaways
ChatGPT search only shows sites its OAI-SearchBot crawler may visit. A site that blocks it is left out of search answers.
A mention cannot be bought: OpenAI says ads do not shape ChatGPT's answers.
Brands that are talked about across the web, and on YouTube in particular, show up more often in AI answers. How many pages a site has barely matters.
The order matters: understand your product and your audience first, then the prompts, then the channels, and only then produce.
Can you get ChatGPT to mention your business?
Yes, if your business appears in the pages ChatGPT reads before it answers. When a buying question needs current information, ChatGPT can run a web search, open a few pages and write its answer from them. scaile traced that process step by step in how OpenAI ChatGPT search works.
A mention is your name somewhere in the answer, for example in a list of providers. A recommendation is your name as the answer to “which one should I choose?”. Recommendations come from the questions buyers ask right before they decide: “best payroll software for a 30-person company”, “alternative to our current agency”, “who does this in Munich”. These questions bring customers, not just impressions.
Why you can’t teach, list or pay your way into the answer
Because none of them changes the pages ChatGPT reads.
ChatGPT search surfaces websites crawled by OAI-SearchBot, so the place to tell it about your business is your site. OpenAI runs GPTBot for content that may be used in training and OAI-SearchBot for search, and site owners control each one separately. [1]
For your website, OpenAI documents a crawler to allow, not a form to fill in. To appear in search results, it recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and its published IP ranges. [1]
An ad buys a labelled slot beside the answer, not a place in it.
Where do the businesses ChatGPT mentions come from?
From two kinds of sources: your own pages that answer the question, and other places that name you.
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Branded web mentions correlated highly with AI visibility (0.66 to 0.71). YouTube mentions correlated most strongly of all factors (about 0.737). The number of pages on a site showed almost no relationship (about 0.194). [3] Ahrefs adds the usual caveat: correlation is not causation, and raising one of these numbers will not automatically raise your visibility.
If ChatGPT ignores you today, the four common causes tell you where to look first. The evidence for each content lever is in how to get cited in AI answers.
Step 1: Understand your product
Before anything is written, be clear about what ChatGPT should say about you. Write down in one place what you sell, who it is for, what it does not do, how the price works and how it differs from the alternatives buyers compare you with.
These facts have to read the same everywhere: on your site, in your profiles and in what partners write about you. A product page that lists benefits does not answer “how much does this cost for a team of 30?”. A page that states the price logic, who the offer fits, what it does not do and how it compares does.
Step 2: Understand your audience
Name the people who buy: their role, the size of their company and the situation they are in when they ask. Someone switching providers asks different questions from a first-time buyer or someone comparing prices.
Your company already knows them from sales calls, support tickets and the questions asked before a demo. Write down the words they use, not your internal terms, because their words end up in their prompts.
Step 3: Understand the keywords and prompts
Turn steps 1 and 2 into the searches buyers type into Google and the questions they ask ChatGPT before they choose a provider. Write the questions without your brand name, because a question that contains it answers itself. Add the searches from Google Search Console and group the list by buying situation, for example “first purchase”, “switching provider” or “comparing prices”, so each group can get its own page.
scaile builds this list from data: it runs social listening, keyword mining, prompt tests and volume checks to find the questions you can win. How many questions a reliable measurement needs, and how to weight them, is covered in which prompts to track.
Ask your questions in a clean ChatGPT session and note who is named and which sources are cited. Repeat it, because the answers change between runs. The method, and what one result is worth, is in the guide to a free AI visibility check.
Two free tools shorten this step. The AI Visibility Check writes ten buying questions from your website and tests them against real ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity sessions. The GPT Search Check sends back the pages OpenAI’s search index returns for up to three queries. It shows whether your pages are there at all.
Step 4: Find the channels that matter for each AI assistant
Each assistant answers from the sources it reads, so the channels worth your time are the ones it cites for your questions. Note for each assistant which sources its answers in step 3 cited: your own site, videos, trade articles, forums or profiles.
For ChatGPT, your own site only counts if it may be read. OAI-SearchBot must be allowed in robots.txt, and requests from OpenAI’s published IP ranges must get through. Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. After a robots.txt change, OpenAI’s search systems take about 24 hours to adjust. [1] A CDN or firewall can still block the bot when robots.txt allows it; AI crawler access shows how to check each bot.
The other sources fall into three groups:
Reviews, demos and how-to videos that name your business. YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility in the Ahrefs study.
Your partCustomers or partners on camera, or your own channelThe “best X for Y” articles ChatGPT cites for your category.
Your partData, a quote or a product to testForums, review sites, directories and LinkedIn, where buyers ask each other for recommendations.
Your partAccurate profiles and real answers from your expertsStep 5: Produce for those prompts and channels
Give every question group a page on your site whose first sentence answers it, built on the facts from step 1. Make each answer specific enough to quote: sourced numbers, named standards, concrete limits. In the study that named generative engine optimization (GEO), GEO methods raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, and the effect varied by domain. [4] It is an arXiv preprint, not peer reviewed.
Before writing a new page, check whether one already ranks for the question. Update that one at the same URL instead of adding a page that competes with it.
Then produce for the channels from step 4: the video, the data or quote for the comparison article, the expert answer in the forum. Quality beats volume here as well. Ahrefs names two things that categorically won’t help: chasing low-quality links and churning out content for content’s sake. [3] A mention in the comparison article ChatGPT cites for your question counts. A directory entry it never reads does not.
Ask the same questions again on a fixed schedule, in the same assistants. Record whether you are named, where in the answer, and which sources are cited. The sources show which page or article produced the change.
Keep the winning pages current: an answer page with outdated prices or features loses the reason it was cited. scaile tracks mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI answers, and refreshes the pages that carry them.
Two case studies on scaile.tech show what being named looks like in numbers:
LipoCheck is the top-ranked answer in ChatGPT for the most relevant questions in its category.
In the 28 days to 21 September 2026, Braun & Kollegen held the largest share of mentions among 25 Munich law firms in AI answers.
ChatGPT already recommends you: how did that happen?
Almost always because a page ChatGPT found for that question names you. Open the answer’s sources and you see which one: your own guide, a comparison article, a review, a forum thread.
Ask the question again in a new session and in two or three wordings, and note which sources stay. Then run the question through the GPT Search Check to see which of your pages OpenAI’s index returns for it. A mention that rests on one third-party article is fragile: if that article is updated without you, the mention can go with it.
Protect what produced the mention: keep your own page current and your entry in the cited article accurate. The questions you already win show you the kind of page ChatGPT trusts from you.
Getting mentioned in ChatGPT is not a trick but five steps in a fixed order. Understand your product and your audience, work out the keywords and prompts they use, find the channels each assistant reads, produce for them, and measure what moved. FAQ
How long does it take to get mentioned in ChatGPT?
It depends on the market and on how many sources already name your competitors. On the Braun & Kollegen account, the law firm moved from second to first in AI answers between two readings five weeks apart. These are observed timings on one account, not a promise.
Can a small business get mentioned in ChatGPT?
Yes. Ahrefs found that ChatGPT seems to rely less on traditional authority signals, which makes it a possible route in for brands without a large footprint.
Does this also work for Google’s AI answers?
Largely, yes. In the Ahrefs study, ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews largely mentioned the same brands, with an output overlap correlation of 0.779. Still check each assistant, because each one reads its own mix of sources.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from mentioning my business?
Not in search answers. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are separate settings, so you can keep your content out of training and still appear in ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
